Men of Faith: The Clergy
Virgil Copas graduated from St Mary's College in 1935. In 1965, he was appointed Archbishop of Port Moresby. He established St Peter’s Extension School in Kerema, PNG. Copas is remembered as a respected Christian gentleman, scholar and man of God, inspired by the highest deals and dedicated to a noble task. He had the remarkable capacity to reach out to people at all levels of society with humility.
William McGoldrick was one of the ‘first day pupils’ at St Mary’s College. He was one of the first Australians to join the Columban Society of Missionaries, founded for the purpose of sending priests to China. He was a cultured man and an accomplished pianist, who had an uplifting influence on the people he served. In his lifetime he brought the love of God to so many people beyond our shores and at home.
Francis Rodgers was a staff member at St Mary’s College from 1974 to 1981. He was the Principal from 1976 to 1981, during which time he earned the respect of students, parents, and staff. He joined the Christian Brothers in 1935 and began his teaching career in 1939. He is remembered for his remarkable memory, keen judgement, dedication to faith, and quiet sense of humour. The oval is named in his honour.
