On the outbreak of World War II, St Mary's College graduate, Harold Hawkins, enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force: he was only 18. Shortly after, he received his wings as a pilot. A born leader, Hawkins was quickly promoted to an Air Vice Marshal, the third highest rank in the RAAF. He was a coolheaded pilot, encouraging people to work with him. Hawkins was highly regarded, for his ability and personality.
John Cantwell was born in Ipswich in 1956 and was educated at St Mary's College. He was a member of the Australian Army Cadets and joined the Australian Army in 1974 as a regular soldier with the rank of Private. He rose through the ranks to become Major General. In 2012, he was brave enough to share his story, by writing a book about his struggle with mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Ian Meibusch excelled at school and was an avid sport player. Ian Meibusch excelled at school and was an avid sport player. Becoming a cadet at St Mary's College, began his work in the Royal Australian Artillery. His postings from the rank of Major to Brigadier were in the areas of employment and training, and technical and scientific development. Meibusch's full and generous life was one of commitment and hard work with a high value placed on his friendships.
