U15 DeVere Cup Winners 2016

Congratulations to the Under 15A Rugby league side who won the DeVere Cup Competition on Wednesday (two weeks ago) with a classy 42-10 win over the minor premiers Mountain Creek at Bishop Park.  The team got off to a sensational start with a barnstorming run from Corey Wright scoring in their 3rd minute down the right edge.  More tries followed with Ollie Moy down the left edge and fancy footwork from both halves in Jordan Lipp and Corey Haywood getting their names on the scoreboard.  St Mary’s went in at half time 30-0 leaders after Ollie Moy scored on the buzzer with a long shift from a penalty tap and Corey Haywood kicking 5 from 5 in the first half.  The onslaught continued in the second half with both Jake Simpkin and Captain Tristan Powell scoring to add the icing on the cake.

The boys displayed the qualities of true winners and what it means to be a St Marys’ man and this game was truly a team effort. The Broncos awarded the man of the match award to Corey Haywood, but it could have gone to all 17 players who played for the Blue and Whites. A special thanks to the entire squad of 25 players and the boys who helped throughout the year.  Without them, this team’s success could not have been possible.

The wins sets the team up as one on the top 6 sides in the south-east corner after narrowly losing to Marsden State High in the quarter final of the Walters’ Cup only two weeks earlier. This is the first time a side has been successful in the Brisbane competition in many years and the boys look forward to competing for a position with the Open squad next year.
