St Mary's College Hockey Win!

Last Monday the St Mary’s open Hockey team competed at the Darling Downs Schools Cup at Clyde Park.  We started the day slowly with the team getting used to playing as a group again.  However, Zac Gooderham’s lethal drag flick on a penalty corner set the side up for a 1-0 win over Centenary Heights.  The next match, against St Joseph’s, saw the team begin to work well together and link some great passes. The goals came flooding in to score a 9-0 victory.

Going into the third game, Toowoomba State High School was keen for a win in order to keep their finals hope alive.  However, our boys had something different in mind scoring 6 great goals with TSHS answering with only 1.  The team shone during this match with an outstanding display of skills and team-work.

This win set up a repeat of last year’s grand final between St Mary’s and Harristown.  After a goal against us in the first 3 minutes, the game was shaping up to be a tough one.  However, the St Mary’s boys showed persistence, managing to score and leave the field at half time locked up in a 1-1 draw.  The second half was a great display of skill with Lachlan Nassar, Campbell Nassar, Cooper Andrews, Zac Gooderham and Connor Lanigan leading an outstanding defensive effort.   This was pushed forward and converted through the efforts of Josh Bidgood, Ty Gooderham, Mitch Thomas, Shoun Dodd, Carter Mogg, Campbell Coghlan and Michael Elsasser, who together scored 2 more goals to seal the grand final win for St Mary’s (3-1).

The team was awarded the Darling Downs Schools Cup – a great achievement! Special mention to the captain, Campbell Coghlan, who was awarded Player of the Final.  Congratulations on a great performance boys!
