Qld Spirit of Catholic Award

This week Queensland celebrates Catholic Education. Approximately 138,000 students, 17,000 teachers and staff make up the 292 Catholic schools in Queensland. St Mary's College was established in 1899, and is proud to be a member of this Catholic Education system.

In 2012, St Mary's College has extra reason to celebrate Catholic Education Week. Each year, seven Spirit of Catholic Education Awards, in the State of Queensland, are presented in conjunction with Catholic Education Week. These awards recognise staff members, parents, clergy or volunteers who are making an outstanding contribution to Catholic Education in Queensland. One of this year’s recipients is our very own Mr Dan McErlean. Dan attended St Mary's College Toowoomba from 1939 to 1947. Since that time he has been an active member of the College Old Boys’ and maintained strong ties with the College and the Christian Brothers. For the past 20 years Dan has been the Editor of the quarterly Old Boys’ newsletter, read by past Old Boys, around the globe. It can be found on the school website: www.stmaryscollege.com. Dan continues to keep in touch with and support the needs of the Old Boys’ and their families, including making regular hospital and home visits. Driven by Dan’s energy and generosity and many other generous old boys, the association purchased and built numerous resources for the College including houses on the school block, the Br Rodgers Sports Oval, Clive Berghofer Stadium and the T. P. O’Brien College Hall. Dan has a profound knowledge of the history of St Mary's College and often assists with College functions. For example, just this year he searched and contacted dozens of Old Boys enabling them to return to the College for our Anzac Day Service. Dan has been personally generous with his time and a member of the Old Boys’ Association in some form since its inception in 1947. It would be hard to find a more generous and significant contributor to the life of a Catholic school community over so many years than Dan .

Mr Dan McErlean will be part of the Ministers Reception hosted by the Hon John-Paul Langbroek MP (Minister for Education, Training and Employment) on Tuesday at Government House. He will then receive his award from Her Excellency Penelope Wensley AC at the Catholic Education Week Official Launch at the Little Flower Church Kedron, Brisbane on Wednesday. On Thursday he will meet and greet our boys at the College Assembly followed by an awards ceremony at the Catholic Education Office Toowoomba.
