A Personal Message to St Mary's

Pope Francis is a refreshing, inspiring and poignant figure in this our 21st century society. On Sunday 24th April, he spoke to young people aged between 13-16 with a message about living in today’s world with a spirit of mercy and sense of Christian purpose. Pope Francis recognised that every young person could not be in Rome to hear him, but he reminded them that his message was for all young people around the world in their parishes and schools. Yes, to all young people, including the young men of St Mary’s College, Toowoomba.

He tells our boys that they are capable of making courageous choices, even through the little things they do, to make the world a better place… Yours is a time of life which is full of amazing changes and everything seems possible and impossible all at once. Stake your lives on noble goals. He said that God calls them one by one, calling each young person by name, as Jesus does each day, to make a difference…All of you are welcome.  He also told them to…commit yourselves to great ideals, to the most important things. With Jesus we can do these great things and He will give you the joy of being His disciples. Pope Francis told young people that now is a time to party! It is a time when we can discover that life together, as brothers and sisters, is like a great party, perhaps the most beautiful party we can imagine, the endless party that Jesus has taught us to celebrate by his spirit. Work for peace and justice for everyone. Don’t be taken in by the messages of hatred or terror all around us. Instead make more friends. Give of your time and always show concern for those who ask your help. Be brave and go against the tide.

Pope Francis is a strong believer in the youth of our world. He expresses great passion and hope in the young of our modern society and the young men of St Mary’s College, Toowoomba. He echoes this Sunday’s post Easter Gospel (John 13:31-35) which states Jesus’ final and most quintessential message before He departed from this world to His father:

I give you a new commandment: Love one another;
Just as I have loved you, you must also love one another.
By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.

Let us pray for all the young men of St Mary’s College and the youth throughout the world that they will accept the personal call bravely and courageously, to live authentically Christian lives with the basic premise to love at all times, all people and in all circumstances. Amen.
