Edmund Rice Charism

During last Thursday’s College assembly to celebrate Catholic Education Week, we acclaimed a number of staff and students who are living role models to us of the Edmund Rice Charism. We acclaimed Mr Tony Buckle, Mrs Cherrell Bignell and Mrs Lyn Quinlan who were recommended for the Queensland Spirit of Catholic Education Awards for 2016. We also acknowledged Mr David Roy who was nominated for the Sr Jo Carmichael Award for service to Catholic Schools in the Toowoomba Diocese. We also recognised a role model student from each year level who espouses significant qualities in this Edmund Rice tradition. I congratulate Matthew Kuhnemann (yr 5), Harry Power (yr 6), Alexanda Myers (yr 7), Thomas Farry (yr 8), Nicholas Kuhnemann (yr 9), Patrick Coleman (yr 10), Joel Collins (yr 11) and Corey Russell (yr 12).

St Mary’s College is an Edmund Rice Associate school. Led and facilitated for 99 years by the Christian Brothers, St Mary’s College keeps alive its heritage and traditions. The Charter identifies four ‘Touchstones’, authentically linked with the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice (Founder) and underpins the ministry of some 50 schools and their educational endeavours throughout Australia.

The four Touchstones Catholic Schools like St Mary’s College Toowoomba in the Edmund Rice tradition aspire to be faithful to are:
1. Liberating Education – Edmund Rice Schools believe that we should open their hearts and minds to quality teaching and learning experiences so that through critical reflection and engagement each person will be hope-filled and free to build a better world for all.
2. Gospel Spirituality – Edmund Rice schools invite all people to share the story of Jesus and strive to make his message of compassion, justice and peace a living reality within our community.
3. Inclusive Community – Edmund Rice Schools believe that our schools and communities should be accepting and welcoming, fostering right relationships and committed to the common good of all people.
4. Justice and Solidarity – Edmund Rice Schools are committed to justice and peace for all, grounded in a spirituality of action and reflection that enables us to stand in solidarity with those who are marginalised and the earth itself.
