Defending Champions

Last week the St Mary’s College First Hockey team returned to the Queensland Hockey State All Schools Cup competition as defending champions. After the success of the previous year the boys were keen to again, come home with the title of ‘Best in the State’. The three day competition saw the boys take on competitive opponents from around Queensland including teams from the Sunshine Coast, Maryborough, Gympie, Cairns and Rockhampton as well as local Darling Downs rivals.

The team qualified as top of their pool from the first two days of competition which set them up for a quarter final against James Nash State High School, Gympie. This game was a challenge for our boys who were 1-0 down at half time, however, after two penalty corner conversations early in the second half, the SMC team held on for a 2-1 win and progression though to the next round against Centenary Heights State High School. This game saw another 2-1 win for the boys with Zac Gooderham scoring after the final siren.

The grand final on the last afternoon of play was against North Rockhampton State High School (NRSHS) who had held the State title several times in recent history. The game was hard-fought with our goalie, Harry Howarth, making some great saves to keep the score line at 0-0 for the half-time break.

The second half saw Zac Gooderham flick the ball past the NRSHS goalie and into the top corner. This was the only goal scored in the final and crowned the St Mary’s team as State Champions for the second year in a row. This is a truly amazing achievement for the team who should be so proud of their efforts. Congratulations to Zac Gooderham who was named Player of the Final and for being our top goal scorer for the tournament.

Thank you to our team manageress, Ms Sharon Collins, for her co-coaching and her continued support. We also thank the many supporters, parents and staff, who made the effort to come out to cheer us along over the three days.
Congratulations boys! State Champions for two consecutive years is truly an amazing achievement.
