Christmas Message

For many of us, Christmas is a time of lots of shopping, coming together as a family, sharing a meal, giving gifts to each other, retelling the exciting story of Santa with the kids, listening to carols, attending church together and enjoying the Christmas lights in our local neighbourhood. Christmas too, is a time where the symbolism of the birth of our Saviour surrounds us - a baby’s innocence, the need for unconditional love, the gift of humanity, peacefulness, love and equanimity. The symbolism of Christmas, therefore, has a significant relevance in our modern world as we face worldwide challenges and difficulties. With the looming threat of North Korea, refugee displacement, guns and shootings, world poverty, civil wars, racism and in recent days, the unravelling situation in Yemen that has become a humanitarian crisis whereby civilians, including thousands of children are facing famine and starvation, we are called, more than any other time in history, to pick up the baby Jesus, intimately embrace him, look into his eyes and hear his message of innocence, unconditional love, the gift of humanity, peace, love and equanimity. May we, as members of the St Mary’s College family, be inspired by the birth of the infant Jesus, our Saviour, to make the world a better place.
