150th Anniversary

St Mary’s College is a Catholic school which commenced educating boys in Toowoomba in 1899. At a similar time, an Australian Sister of St Joseph, by the name of Mary Mackillop, was starting schools to teach young people throughout Australia including in the Darling Downs region. As an Australian woman, Mary Mackillop is not only admired for her fortitude, strength of character, response to the needs of the time and faith in God, but also because she was an Australian like us. In fact, the only ever Australian saint beatified by the Catholic Church and Pope in Rome. On Monday 8th August, the feast of St Mary of the Cross Mackillop, all members of the St Mary’s College family are welcome to attend a Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Sisters of St Joseph. The Sisters of St Joseph is the order of Australian sisters that Mary Mackillop established and inspired to enable her work to flourish. We continue to pray to Mary Mackillop, our Australian saint for the College and to ask her to intercede to God on our behalf for our personal intentions.

Mary Mackillop Prayer

Ever generous God,
You inspired Saint Mary Mackillop
To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ
And constant in bringing hope and encouragement
To those who were disheartened, lonely or needy.
With confidence in your generous providence
And through the intercession of Saint Mary Mackillop
We ask that you grant our request……………………
We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the
Holy Spirit
So that we too, like Mary Mackillop, may live with
courage, trust and openness.
Ever generous God hear our prayer.
We ask this prayer through Jesus Christ. Amen
